ABA Gives Judges Green Light To Tweet, But Urges Caution

Law360, New York (February 27, 2013, 6:41 PM EST) -- Your Honor, you're free to tweet. That's the gist of a new American Bar Association opinion on the judicial use of social media tools like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, which says that judges can socialize online, but should do so carefully.

The opinion issued last week by the ABA's Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility gives judges wide latitude to engage online within existing code of conduct rules — even in cases where their online "friends" are lawyers who may appear in their court.
