E.U. Move Raises Ire Of Software Patent Foes

Law360, New York (October 10, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Activist groups are protesting what they see as an underhanded effort to legalize software patents in Europe despite repeated rejections by the European Parliament. Proponents of the long-awaited community patent say the opponents are simply confusing the issue.

Groups like the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure claim that the creation of a centralized patent process in the European Union, as proposed by the Community Patent legislation, would normalize the European Patent Office practice of issuing patents for software.
