MDL Panel Extinguishes Big Tobacco's Transfer Hope

Law360, New York (December 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has denied the bid of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. to consolidate a host of post-Engle cases, dampening the company's ability to fend off attempts to reinstate a $145 billion class action jury verdict in a federal forum.

On Wednesday, the MDL panel shot down the defendants' transfer request, unconvinced that consolidation would be the best course of action as the Engle plaintiffs attempt to pursue their individual claims against the tobacco giants.
