Timex Sues USPTO Over 'Intelligent Quartz' Trademark

Law360, New York (March 18, 2013, 5:14 PM EDT) -- Timex Group USA Inc. on Friday took its fight to register "Intelligent Quartz" as a trademark for a line of watches to a Virginia federal court, arguing the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was mistaken when it found that the phrase was a straight-ahead description of the products and did not qualify for trademark protection.

Connecticut-based Timex wants to trademark the name for eight timepieces that, beyond telling local time, show the time in foreign countries and have thermometers, compasses or other added features. The company...
