ND Lawmakers Pass Nation's Strictest Abortion Bans

Law360, New York (March 15, 2013, 11:00 PM EDT) -- The North Dakota legislature passed two of the nation's most restrictive abortion bills Friday, one of which would prohibit the procedure when the fetus has a detectable heartbeat at six weeks.

The so-called fetal heartbeat bill, H.B. 1456, is tougher even than Arkansas legislators' recent bar to abortions after the 12th week of pregnancy. The state Senate approved the bill along with H.B. 1305, which would ban abortions to select the sex of the baby or because of genetic defects such as Down syndrome
