HealthSouth, Drs. To Pay $14.9M In Kickbacks Case

Law360, New York (December 14, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Health care provider HealthSouth Corp. has agreed to pay $14.2 million to settle charges that the company paid illegal kickbacks to doctors who referred patients to the company's facilities, bringing an end to a suit filed against the company by federal prosecutors.

In a settlement disclosed on Friday, the Department of Justice said that in addition to HealthSouth's $14.2 million payment, Drs. James Andrews and Lawrence Lemak, two physicians who admitted to taking kickbacks from the company, would pay a combined total of $700,000. Andrews will...
