NRC Will Stiffen Nuke Plant Venting System Regs

Law360, New York (March 19, 2013, 7:02 PM EDT) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Tuesday said it would toughen requirements for certain nuclear plant venting systems and perform a technical evaluation of its proposed rule requiring the installation of filtered vents at those plants, amid industry concerns that those vents may not be cost-effective.

The NRC voted to require operators of boiling water reactors, known as Mark I or Mark II reactors — of which there are 31 in the U.S. — to upgrade or replace reliable hardened containment vents originally mandated by the NRC...
