EC Proposes To Fine Car Companies For Excess CO2

Law360, New York (December 19, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission proposed new legislation on Wednesday that would use the threat of fines to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of new passenger cars from its current average of about 160 grams per kilometer to 120 grams per kilometer by 2012.

Under the proposal, vehicle manufacturers would have to reach an average of 130 g/km of CO2 from improved engine technology and an additional reduction of 10 g/km through the use of biofuels and more efficient gears, tyres and air-conditioning.
