Acacia, Universities Close To Deal On Internet Patent

Law360 (October 17, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Higher education has a difficult choice to make in its fight against Acacia Technologies’ streaming video/audio patents: agree to a new, less-expensive license agreement two years in the making, or continue the battle to invalidate Acacia’s claims.

Licensing company Acacia Research Corp. claims to own a patent covering all technology for “streaming” video and audio on the internet. Starting in 2003, its subsidiary Acacia Media Technologies sent requests for licensing to more than 40,000 universities over their online education programs that use the technology.
