Patent Applications Flood USPTO Before 1st-To-File Deadline

Law360, New York (April 4, 2013, 6:25 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was deluged with nearly five times the average volume of patent applications in the week before the nation changed to a first-to-file patent system, including nearly 14,000 in a single day, according to figures the office released Thursday.

In the five business days leading up to the historic change March 16, the USPTO received 34,112 patent applications. In the five previous months, the office received an average of 7,205 applications per week.
