1st Black Female Judge In Line To Serve NY High Court

Law360, New York (April 5, 2013, 6:14 PM EDT) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday tapped state appellate Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam to serve on the state's highest court and if confirmed, become the court's first African-American female judge.

Judge Abdus-Salaam's potential seat on the New York State Court of Appeals was previously occupied by Theodore T. Jones, the court's lone black judge who sat on the bench until his death in November.

Cuomo on Friday praised Judge Abdus-Salaam's extensive judicial and legal expertise, calling her one of the state's most respected and experienced jurists....
