$1.6B Highmark-West Penn Merger Backed By Consultants

Law360, Philadelphia (April 8, 2013, 6:09 PM EDT) -- Two consultant reports released Monday by the Pennsylvania Insurance Department suggested that insurer Highmark Inc.’s proposed $1.6 billion acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System Inc. would have positive effects for policyholders and health care consumers in western Pennsylvania.

The encouraging feedback from Blackstone Advisory Partners of New York and Compass Lexecon of Chicago increases the likelihood that the department will approve Highmark’s purchase of the struggling West Penn, which is locked in tight competition with rival provider University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
