Compounders Need FDA Oversight, Markey Says

Law360, New York (April 15, 2013, 2:41 PM EDT) -- U.S. compounding pharmacies are largely operating without necessary oversight and regulation from states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must be given the authority to set and enforce safety standards at the pharmacies, a Democratic congressman said Monday.

According to Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., most states have largely failed to properly inspect or enforce sanctions against compounding pharmacies — which typically mix custom-order drugs for patients with special needs at the request of a doctor — allowing these pharmacies to effectively exist without oversight....
