Rio Tinto Mine Expansion Nixed Over Ecological Impact

Law360, New York (April 15, 2013, 6:45 PM EDT) -- Rio Tinto Group on Monday lost its bid to expand a coal mine in Australia's Hunter Valley after an Australian judge overturned government approval for the project, saying the expansion is likely to negatively impact endangered ecological communities in the area. 

Rio Tinto's Mount Thorley Warkworth operation — which produces millions of tons of coal per year —  received conditional approval last February provided the project included offsets to compensate for the expansion's environmental impact.
