Two Firms Fight Over Foley Service Mark

Law360, New York (October 24, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Is Boston big enough for two Foleys? Beantown’s Foley Hoag has filed a trademark suit against Midwestern powerhouse Foley & Lardner, alleging that the firm has caused consumers to confuse the two firms by marketing itself simply as “Foley.”

“We welcome the competition and our lawsuit isn’t about trying to stop competition,” Robert Sanoff, a partner with Foley Hoag, said. “We believe Foley & Lardner’s attempt to appropriate the term Foley is improper, especially in Boston, an area in which we are well established.”
