Sen. Introduces Bill To Mandate Nurse Staffing Ratios

Law360, New York (April 17, 2013, 8:20 PM EDT) -- Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., on Tuesday introduced a bill aimed at reducing nursing shortages by establishing a minimum nurse-to-patient ratio for hospitals and offering whistleblower protection for nurses who report quality-of-care violations.

Boxer's bill, S. 739, the National Nursing Shortage Reform and Patient Advocacy Act, is based in part on a California law establishing minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in state hospitals.
