IBM Opens Patent Trove To Healthcare Industry

Law360, New York (October 25, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Health care and education companies will soon have access to thousands of IBM patents after Big Blue said it would share its patent portfolio in hopes of fostering industry-wide software standards.

IBM will make the patents available in order to improve information sharing and data communication, the company said.

The patent pledge makes sense from both a social and an IT standpoint, Dr. Robert Sutor, IBM Vice President for Standards and Open Source, said.
