Consol Strikes $36M Settlement To Replace Cracked Pa. Dam

Law360, Philadelphia (April 24, 2013, 5:46 PM EDT) -- Consol Energy Inc. on Wednesday agreed to shell out $36 million and forfeit 506 acres of land to settle claims that its southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine caused cracks in a state-owned dam.

The agreement puts to rest a dispute before the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board in which Consol challenged a determination by the state Department of Environmental Protection that the company was liable for damage to a dam in Greene County's Ryerson Station State Park as a result of land subsidence below the structure.
