Ex-Mass. Probation Head Charged With Bribing Lawmakers

Law360, New York (April 25, 2013, 2:16 PM EDT) -- Federal prosecutors handed down a superseding indictment Wednesday accusing the former head of the Massachusetts Probation Department of bribing state legislators by giving jobs to their family and friends in order to gain influence with the lawmakers.

John J. O'Brien, who led the department from 1998 until May 2010, was charged with 17 counts of bribery along with multiple counts of racketeering and mail fraud for his alleged role in a scheme to curry favor with Massachusetts legislators who were in a position to impact the...
