Brazil Diplomat Is WTO's 1st Latin American Director-General

Law360, New York (May 7, 2013, 7:53 PM EDT) -- Brazilian diplomat Roberto Azevedo was chosen as the next director-general of the World Trade Organization on Tuesday, marking the first time the organization has picked a leader from Latin America.

Azevedo beat out Mexico's former trade minister Herminio Blanco for the position and will succeed France's Pascal Lamy, who has served in the WTO's top position since 2005. When he assumes office later this year, Azevedo will be the sixth director-general of the global trade organization since its formation in 1995.
