Merck Bullish On Vioxx Deal As Deadline Passes

Law360, New York (January 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Now that the first significant deadline in the Vioxx settlement agreement has passed, Merck & Co. says it is confident the plaintiffs will be able to meet the requirements for the $4.85 billion deal to be completed.

Midnight Tuesday was the deadline for all the plaintiffs to register claims alleging the withdrawn painkiller caused them to suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Kent Jarrell, a spokesman for the Vioxx litigation team, said Wednesday that “55,000 and counting” claims were filed before the deadline.
