NTSB Tiptoes Around Cause Of Bridge Collapse

Law360, New York (January 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- In the wake of the Minneapolis bridge collapse that killed 13 people, the National Transportation Safety Board has issued a safety warning regarding gusset plates but has stopped short of identifying them as the cause of the collapse.

On Tuesday, the board strongly urged the Federal Highway Administration to require bridge owners to conduct load-capacity calculations. The calculations could design problems that go undetected in normal inspections, the board said.
