Device Debris Left In Patients Poses Peril: FDA

Law360, New York (January 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is telling health care practitioners to inspect medical devices carefully and use them according to instructions to avoid leaving device fragments in patients, which lead to about 1,000 injuries every year.

The FDA issued a health warning on Tuesday to advise doctors and other health care professionals of serious consequences associated with unretrieved device fragments, or UDFs. The agency's notice also offered recommendations to prevent such situations.
