Facing Payment Cuts, Health Cos. Embrace E-Records: HHS

Law360, New York (May 22, 2013, 2:42 PM EDT) -- Half of U.S. doctors and more than three-quarters of hospitals have made meaningful use of electronic health records, federal officials said Wednesday, a surge driven by billions of dollars in public investment and threats of reduced Medicare payments for not embracing the technology.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department said it’s delivered incentive payments — typically worth tens of thousands of dollars — to about 290,000 doctors and 3,800 hospitals. That represents more than 50 percent of all physicians and 80 percent of hospitals....
