House OKs Mine Safety Bill, Tempting Veto

Law360, New York (January 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The House has passed a union-backed bill aimed at increasing safety measures for miners, but concern that the bill would meddle with rules already in place and strong opposition from the coal-mining industry, congressional Republicans and the U.S. president mean it's unlikely to go the distance.

Approved on Wednesday by a 214-199 vote, the Supplemental Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act, known as the S-Miner, proposes a number of rules to step up mining safety following the fatal collapse of a Utah mine last year....
