Sandra Day O'Connor Slams Judicial Elections At Philly Bar

Law360, Philadelphia (June 12, 2013, 4:12 PM EDT) -- Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor told a gathering of Philadelphia attorneys on Wednesday to push for reforms in judicial selection, warning that elections and the associated responsibilities of campaigning and fundraising undermine public confidence in the judiciary. 

Speaking to the sold-out quarterly meeting of the Philadelphia Bar Association, the justice focused her remarks on growing threats to judicial independence in Pennsylvania and across the country.

“It’s a serious problem that people in this country think of judges as politicians in robes,” O’Connor said....
