Monsanto Faces Farmer's Negligence Suit Over Wheat Scare

Law360, New York (June 4, 2013, 5:45 PM EDT) -- Monsanto Co. was hit with a gross negligence suit in Kansas federal court Monday from a farmer who said the biotechnology company caused wheat export futures prices to plummet after its unapproved, genetically modified form of wheat unexpectedly surfaced in an Oregon field, triggering a scare.

The revelation that Monsanto's genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant wheat had somehow spread to a location where it had never been field-tested prompted the European Union to advise member states to screen grain imports from the U.S. more closely and some Asian nations...
