RJ Reynolds Hit With $8.3M Judgment Over Eclipse Ads

Law360, Chicago (June 5, 2013, 3:34 PM EDT) -- A Vermont judge has ordered R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. to shell out $8.3 million in the state's suit alleging the tobacco giant deceptively advertised its Eclipse cigarette as carrying reduced health risks, the state attorney general said Tuesday.

Superior Judge Dennis R. Pearson entered a final judgment Monday that ordered Reynolds to cough up the civil penalty partly as a sanction for contempt of a 1998 consent decree from the same court and violation of the master settlement agreement referenced in that decree.
