Costa Rica Ends Disputed Rice Subsidies

Law360, New York (June 5, 2013, 5:03 PM EDT) -- Costa Rica has notified the World Trade Organization that it will end subsidies for its domestic rice industry next year, resolving a three-year dispute with the U.S. and other trading partners.

The Central American country said it would eliminate price support mechanisms for rice on March 1, 2014, according to documents filed Wednesday, removing a system that the U.S., Pakistan, Australia, Canada and Japan have complained is an illegal distortion of free trade under the world body's rules.
