Ahead Of Trade Talks, Sens. Rip EU Tobacco Rule Changes

Law360, New York (June 7, 2013, 2:26 PM EDT) -- Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and three other senators from Southern tobacco producing states have warned the European Union that proposed restrictions on tobacco could violate international rules and complicate upcoming talks for a transatlantic free trade agreement.

The senators, who will need to approve any eventual deal struck for the planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, told the EU last month that proposed revisions to Europe's so-called Tobacco Products Directive would be seen as a barrier to trade by the U.S.
