Privacy Group Tells HHS To Hold Off On HIPAA Revisions

Law360, Washington (June 12, 2013, 6:54 PM EDT) -- The Electronic Privacy Information Center urged the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to hold off revising federal health privacy laws as part of new gun control efforts until the U.S. Department of Justice narrows its barriers to firearm ownership, the group said Tuesday.

The DOJ and individual states do not have enough safety mechanisms in place to guarantee mental health patients' privacy, and HHS should not revise Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act provisions without those guards, according to EPIC.
