USPTO Nixes Versata Patent In 1st-Ever AIA Ruling

Law360, New York (June 12, 2013, 1:21 PM EDT) -- In its first-ever decision in a patent challenge under the America Invents Act, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday invalidated a Versata Software Inc. patent on a product pricing method that SAP America Inc. had been ordered to pay $391 million for infringing.

The USPTO's Patent Trial and Appeal Board agreed with SAP that Versata's patent covers only the abstract idea of arranging customer and product data and calculating a product price.
