UK Moves To Regulate E-Cigarettes As Medicine

Law360, New York (June 12, 2013, 7:00 PM EDT) -- A British health regulator on Wednesday announced that it will reclassify electronic cigarettes as medicines in an effort to make them safer for consumers, and will pressure the European Union to take up a similar position across the bloc.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency will take over the oversight of nicotine-containing products — including e-cigarettes, gums, patches, mouth sprays and other products — which are currently regulated as consumer products and can vary widely in quality and effectiveness, according to the regulator.
