FDA Pushes For Increased Medical Device Cybersecurity

Law360, New York (June 13, 2013, 1:57 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued new draft guidance on Thursday urging medical device manufacturers to build safety controls into increasingly prevalent network-enabled devices in order to prevent the unauthorized access and theft of confidential medical information.

Alongside these preliminary premarket submission guidelines, the FDA also issued a safety communication to manufacturers, hospitals and biomedical engineers on Thursday urging them to take certain steps to limit the risk of cyber attacks against existing systems.
