DA Counters Pa. Pol's Bid To Nix Staff Campaigning Conviction

Law360, Philadelphia (June 13, 2013, 2:08 PM EDT) -- Pennsylvania prosecutors asked the state’s Superior Court Wednesday to uphold the conviction of former state Sen. Jane Orie, sister of convicted former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, for using her staff to work on campaign activities.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala fought back at Orie’s claims that her conviction should be thrown out on grounds of double jeopardy, arguing that the trial court had no choice but to declare a mistrial in her initial trial.
