Europeans Tighten Caps On CO2 Emissions

Law360, New York (January 23, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission has taken a hard line against the greenhouse gas emissions that have hastened climate change, proposing a new initiative that will cap carbon dioxide emissions for the electricity, steel and paper industries.

The commission said on Wednesday that it hopes to decrease greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 20% by 2020.

To reach this goal, the EC said, it will extend the emissions trading scheme and set emissions targets for industries not included in the ETS.
