Fla. Appeals Court Upholds $20M Award For Smoker's Widow

Law360, Miami (June 13, 2013, 10:59 PM EDT) -- A Florida appeals court on Thursday affirmed a judgment of $20 million against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for causing the death of a smoker, saying its hands were tied because the company failed to argue its right to object during rehearing in the trial court.

The state's First District Court of Appeal also rejected the tobacco company's argument that the proposed remitted judgment in Layntie Townsend's case on behalf of her late husband Frank exceeded the maximum amount allowed under federal due process. In a February...
