Pa. Rep Aims To Mandate Closed Storage For Fracking Water

Law360, Philadelphia (June 17, 2013, 3:46 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania state representative on Monday introduced legislation aimed at prohibiting the use of open impoundments for storing liquids used in drilling for natural gas.

House Bill 1546, put forth by Rep. Karen Bobrack, R-Luzerne, would mandate that all liquid wastes connected to hydraulic fracturing be kept in closed containment or closed loop systems.

“While many companies already utilize closed containment or closed loop systems, others do not,” Bobrack said in a memo. “This bill would dictate their use.”
