Total To Pay Damages In Spill While Planning Appeal

Law360, New York (January 25, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Two weeks after a French court found Total SA responsible for the 1999 sinking of the Erika tanker, the company has decided to pay the victims associated with the country's worst environmental disaster even while forging ahead with plans for an appeal.

On Friday, Total revealed that it would comply with the court order to hand over millions to the victims, though the company still has plans to fight the landmark guilty verdict.
