Earthquake May Cause 'Failure' At Los Alamos, DOE IG Finds

Law360, New York (June 28, 2013, 5:06 PM EDT) -- The inspector general of the U.S. Department of Energy warned Thursday that part of Los Alamos National Laboratory is at risk of structural failure in the event of an earthquake, recommending that the nuclear materials facilities add safeguards to prevent a potential release of plutonium.

The inspector general’s report said that a 1970’s era structure supporting pit manufacturing, surveillance and special plutonium recovery is out of step with modern building codes and is susceptible to structural failure if subjected to “strong seismic ground motions.”
