Lawmakers Subpoena FDA, HHS Head In Ketec Probe

Law360, New York (January 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A congressional panel investigating the approval of the antibiotic Ketek voted Tuesday to subpoena several U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigators and documents from Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt.

Ketec, manufactured by French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis to treat pneumonia and other infections, has been linked to multiple cases of liver damage and death since it was approved in 2004. Lawmakers have alleged that the drug was approved even though the FDA knew there were serious data problems with a key study.
