EU Adds Pharmaceuticals To Water Pollution Watch List

Law360, New York (July 2, 2013, 5:01 PM EDT) -- For the first time, the European Union added three pharmaceuticals to its watch list for chemicals that pose a pollution risk to surface waters Tuesday, including a common painkiller recently linked to an increased risk of heart attack.

The European Parliament announced it was adding 12 new chemicals to its priority list of known surface water pollutants, and that it would also designate three pharmaceutical products as “emerging pollutants” that might one day be elevated to the priority list.
