Duke's Power Plant Gets State OK As Foes Regroup

Law360, New York (January 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Duke Energy received final approval Tuesday from North Carolina environmental officials to build a new coal-fired plant, but environmental groups have pledged to continue fighting the project.

Last year, several groups, including the Southern Environmental Law Center, Environmental Defense and the North Carolina Waste Awareness and Reduction Network, filed a brief with state officials urging them to reject the plan.

The permit from the state Division of Air Quality was the final hurdle in regulatory approval for the Charlotte-based utility's $2.4 billion project.
