Court Rules India's Largest Copper Smelter Can Stay Open

Law360, New York (July 15, 2013, 2:49 PM EDT) -- India's environmental court ruled Monday that the country's largest copper smelter can stay open and resume normal operations, citing a report by a panel of experts that concluded the Sterlite Industries India Ltd. plant has not been emitting excessive amounts of sulfur dioxide.

Authorities in the state of Tamil Nadu shut down the smelter in April after residents of nearby communities complained of sulfur dioxide emissions. The smelter produces about 30,000 tonnes of refined copper a month, about half of India's total output.
