With West In Tow, World Bank Bets Relevance On Green Power

Law360, New York (July 19, 2013, 4:46 PM EDT) -- Within the World Bank, a fierce ethical debate over how to power developing nations could dictate how the entire Western world sets it energy policy, insiders say. That debate was finally settled Tuesday, but perhaps at an impossible cost.

After years of hesitancy, the World Bank adopted a decisive strategy that tells developing nations to choose sustainable energy or find funding elsewhere. In a major policy shift, the bank’s directive says it will only finance traditional coal-fired power plants when there’s no feasible alternative.
