Europe Looks To Simplify Cosmetics Oversight

Law360, New York (February 6, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission has proposed new legislation to simplify cosmetics regulation in Europe and strengthen product safety, the commission said Tuesday.

The proposed regulation aims to streamline the complicated legislative process that currently regulates the €65 billion ($95 billion) European cosmetics industry. It would turn diverse regulations from 27 nations made up of 3,500 pages of legal text into one law.

In narrowing the differences between current national regulations, the commission said it hopes to strengthen product safety while cutting costs for businesses.
