Sen. Schumer Warns of Smart TV Spying Danger

Law360, New York (August 7, 2013, 4:39 PM EDT) -- Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Tuesday called on electronics makers to develop industrywide security standards for emerging "smart TV" technology, saying hackers can easily infiltrate the devices’ Web-enabled, built-in cameras and spy on consumers in their homes.

Schumer says that many next-generation televisions are pre-equipped with camera setups for video chat and other purposes, and warns that those cameras come with almost no privacy safeguards and leave consumers vulnerable to the theft of personal information.
