Consol Mining Unit Hit With Water Contamination Suit

Law360, New York (August 9, 2013, 7:23 PM EDT) -- The Sierra Club and two state environmental groups are targeting another mountaintop removal coal mining facility for allegedly contaminating local streams, lodging a suit against a Consol Energy Inc. affiliate in West Virginia federal court on Thursday.

Mine runoff from a Fola Coal Co. LLC site has sent dangerous levels of sulfates and other dissolved solids into a local tributary, harming aquatic populations and violating the state's water quality standards, according to the complaint.
