Deaths Prompt FDA Crackdown On Colchicine

Law360, New York (February 7, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it would be taking enforcement action against companies that market unapproved injectable colchicine in the wake of a slew of deaths related to the drug, which is used to treat gout and other ailments.

The agency said it was bumping up its scrutiny of intravenous colchicine after it became aware of 50 reports of adverse events, including 23 deaths, associated with the use of the drug.
