Abbott Labs Sued By Activists Over AIDS Drug Patents

Law360 (December 2, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- Launching a new attack on Abbott Laboratories Inc.’s control of the lucrative AIDS treatment Kaletra, a group of international organizations has sued the pharmaceutical company in a Brazilian court to invalidate its patents for the drug.

If successful, the suit would trigger the drug’s massive generic reproduction in the country, without threat of legal action, only two months after the Brazilian government negotiated with Abbott for a huge reduction in the cost of the drug.
